Digital cameras are all the rage these days. Prices have moved into tolerable range and image quality continues to improve with each generation of hardware. Case Logic, the music and digital media storage company, has released a new line of padded camera bags especially designed for stowing all of the hardware and accessories associated with digital cameras.
The most useful bag in the line, the DC-70, measures 6" wide x 2 1/2" deep x 5 1/2" high. Made of Koskin fabric, a faux leather that even smells like the real thing, the bag has one main compartment (with a padded (re)movable divider) to store the camera and computer connection cables. A zippered front panel contains several interior mesh pockets and a zippered accessory compartment for storing batteries, additional cables, floppies, CD-ROMs, etc. The bag comes with an adjustable shoulder strap and a belt loop. The case also has a reinforced waterproof panel on its bottom. The DC-70 bag is very nice. I was at first skeptical that it would hold all of the gear needed for most digital cameras, and without trying it out on various models, I'm still not sure. It was definitely designed to accommodate the cameras with point-and-shoot form factors, not the larger SRL-styled cameras like the Olympus D-600L. As long as you have a slim camera with the normal digital camera accessories (computer cable, A-type batteries, CD-ROM or floppy software), you should be able to fit everything just fine. I was disappointed in the strap for the bag. It's a little flimsy and does not have a rubber shoulder grip, like many good laptop bags. You really have to hold onto the bag to insure that it's not going to slip off (unless you put it over your head). The styling is kinda cool, with a nubbly PVC accent on the flap and on the bag's underside (which serves as the waterproofing). It could even be used as an all-purpose gadget bag or geek girl's shoulder bag. The fine folks at Case Logic also sent us two of their other digital camera bags: the DC-40 and the DC-50. The DC-40 is just large enough (5 1/2" x 4" x 2 1/2") to hold a standard size digital camera. It has a shoulder strap and a small zippered pocket (not really large enough to hold any camera accessories). The DC-50 is a bit larger (5 1/2" x 5 3/4" x 2 1/2") and can hold a few accessories such as a flash memory card, batteries, etc. These bags are basically designed for going out in the field where you won't be using a laptop to connect or require access to any of your camera-to-computer gear. At $7 SRP for the DC-40 and $10 for the DC-50, you sure can't beat the price. - Gareth Branwyn [1/26/98]
