It sounds like some industrial-strength prophylactic, and it sort of is, the RhinoSkin Titanium Hardcase offers indestructible protection for your PalmPilot. This handsome case (formerly called "The Cockpit") uses sheets of folded 100% grade 1 titanium, a slotted rod hinge, aircraft rivets and has a blasted finish (similar to the head of titanium golf clubs). It's lined with neoprene rubber for padding and has a cut-out area underneath where the PalmPilot goes for stashing money, credit card, ID, or other small, flat items. RhinoSkin claims that 3COM put the Hardcase through a number of torture tests and found that it kept its contents safe and damage-free after drops from 3, 5, 7 and even 9 feet (onto low-pile carpet).

The Hardcase also holds the IBM Workpad, but sadly, not the PalmPC (at least my Everex Freestyle didn't fit). It weighs about 5.6 ounces and measures 3-21/32" x 5-1/32" x 15/16". I really like the look, feel and protective value of this case. But, as we've discussed on the Shop Talk topic about PDA cases, it's different strokes for different folks. This case only makes sense for those who are going to be carrying a Pilot by hand and want more protection than the standard case can afford, those who are carrying it in a briefcase and want something with some industrial chic object value, or those who are using a Pilot in extreme wear conditions and are willing to pay some bucks for the best possible protection. If you're any of these users, and the one hundred dollar price tag doesn't scare you off, the Titanium Hardcase is definitely a great accessory to have. If you want to wear the Hardcase (which I'd imagine would be rather bulky), a really nice "ClipPack" case is available (in black or tan) for $25. The Hardcase and ClipPack can be had bundled together for $113.

For those looking for a softer, lighter, more easily wearable case with room for accessories, there's the RhinoSkin 2000 (US$50). It will hold any PDA/PalmPC (7" x 4-1/4" x 1-1/4" or smaller) in its cushioned inner shell, along with a modem, cables, and other small gear (such as the DeLorme Earthmate GPS unit). Made of codura nylon, it has a belt loop, several zipper pockets, a mesh pocket, internal battery pockets and a place for an extra stylus or "analog" pen. It weighs approx. 4.6 ounces and is now available only in black.
