I never would have bought myself a SnakeLight. That's what spouses and Christmas are all about - getting stuff you don't know you need.

The SnakeLight is essentially a really good flashlight. Built out of high impact ABS plastic, it's designed to take abuse and keep on shinnin'. The xenon bulb squeezes a lot of light out of two D-size batteries. What separates the SnakeLight from all the other flashlights tucked away in cabinets and drawers around my house is the 16" flexible shaft between the battery pack and the light head.

Flexible is a relative term, and I've worked with a variety of microphone goosenecks and other so-called "flexible" tools that seemed to expect the flexibility to come from me! Not so here. This thing holds whatever shape you twist it into. I'm not sure what exactly is under the rubber that's wrapped around the shaft, but it sure does the trick.

The SnakeLight concept has proven so popular that it's been expanded into a whole family of products, from a flashlight that's been adapted for automotive use to a halogen worklight. The basic model is still the mainstay of the line, though, and usually a sellout item at hardware stores during Christmas shopping season. It comes with a wall mount adapter that allows you to hang it conveniently out of the way between uses, but I've never been between uses long enough to put it away. It's particularly handy when I'm rewiring something like the computer, the stereo or the mass of cables that keep the TV/VCR/game module/cable box operating. Draped over the top of almost anything, the beam can be aimed right where you need it, keeping both hands free. It's also the thing to grab during a power outage.

You can find the SnakeLight in most hardware and department stores and it's frequently on sale. The best buy I've seen lately is $18.25 at www.fredericktrading.com/whsespec.html. The only drawback is you have to buy a lot of six. I smell Christmas presents!
